The Evolution of Slots Games

The Evolution of Slots Games
When you think of slots many think of those one armed bandits as seen in old time Las Vegas or in the movies. You put in coins and had to pull a lever to make the reels spin. Slots are typically themed with the theme limited only by the imagination of the designer. Land based casinos certainly have seen changes in slots. You now only have to push a button and there are other options available. With the inception of online slots at online casinos the choices are even more diverse, changing the face of slots games as we know it. It is interesting to see how slots games have evolved throughout the years. Charles Fey from California in the US invented the first slot machine in the lat 1800's. Since then it has come a long way.
Traditional slots
When you gamble at online casinos that have slots games you will likely find a category for traditional slots. This is typically a catch all term to mean a slots game that has three reels and one pay line without a lot of extra features. You spin the reels. They pay line is across the middle of the three lines. Whatever lands on that line is what determines your winnings, if any. There may be additions such as wildcards, symbols that can be used in place of any other symbol to help you win.
Multiple reels with online slots
A popular type of slots game today is the multi reel slot. Instead of the traditional three reels there are five and even nine reels that are becoming popular with five reel slots being the most prevalent. With five reel slots it looks as if two more reels were added but with nine it looks like a three reel slot but with each reel spinning independently so the top, middle and bottom reel in three columns spins.
Multiple pay lines
Traditionally the pay line was located across the middle. However, with today's online slots you have the chance to choose the number of pay lines you want. You may have pay lines that span horizontal rows on top, middle and bottom, plus vertical columns spanning all reels and even diagonally across the reels. You choose the number of pay lines according to your wager. You an choose a single pay line or more up to the maximum available pay lines.
Variables in online slots
With advancing technology, slots designers have become very creative and have added some fun variables to the game. Wild cards can be used in place of any other symbol, multipliers give you the original jackpot multiplied by the amount shown on the reel, scatter symbols will let you win regardless of where in the reel it appears and bonus games are triggered when a symbol or combination appears. Another game is then started that will increase your original jackpot. Bonus spins will allow you to continue spinning the reels after a jackpot and will keep going until there is a loss with no additional wager. Bumps allow you to move or bump the reel to your advantage so that a symbol that appears on a reel will drop to a pay line. The latest incarnation of slots games is the iSlots and variations that allow the player to be interactive with the game. Some slots allow you to stop the reels when you want them to stop or to auto play.
Jackpots
There are two types of jackpot: straight and progressive. A straight jackpot is where there is a set amount that will be won if you hit the required combination of symbols. This will depend on the amount of the wager, number of pay lines and symbols. Most online slots allow you to automatically choose the max lines and max bet. However, be careful doing this because each spin can get expensive. Progressive jackpots are run across a network of online slots and the jackpot accumulates with each spin across all players who are playing. It continues to build until it is won.
